TOMS Eyewear - Restore More Than Sight

…As the TOMS Eyewear Design Director, Darrin is inspired by much more than the craftsmanship of superb eyewear design: it's the stories behind each frame that truly drive him. In each pair, two worlds are connected, and a customer changes the future of a person in need with the gift of sight. It's how an elderly woman like Nyamambara, a grandmother in Tanzania, received free eye surgery, allowing her to see her four-year old grandson clearly for the first time in years.

"The fact that we're designing eyewear not for the sake of design -- it changes the premise of everything."

With every pair of eyewear you purchase, TOMS will help give sight to a person in need. One for One®.

TOMS: A Look at Podoconiosis

Published on Mar 18, 2014

While on his first trip to Ethiopia, TOMS Founder and Chief Shoe Giver Blake Mycoskie learned of a debilitating disease called podoconiosis, or podo for short. Podo is the extreme swelling of the legs due to an irritant soil found in certain countries around the world. According to the World Health Organization, there are about 4 million people around the world affected with podo, the majority of them living in Ethiopia.

Because it causes disfiguration, podo has profound social and economic impact. Affected individuals are often barred from attending school, ostracized from social and religious events and are seen as less desirable partners for marriage, which can make it difficult for them to have a meaningful life.

However, podo not only treatable, but it is also 100 percent preventable, just by wearing shoes. When Blake returned from his trip, he decided TOMS would take on podoconiosis as a personal cause, helping to fund clinics working to eradicate the disease.
