Scholastic Instructor K-12 design poster and activity series


In May 2006, with the generous support of Target, AIGA launched a design poster and activity series in Scholastic Instructor magazine to promote design thinking in the K-12 classroom. All four posters and activities are available for download below.

The first poster, designed by Alexander Isley Inc. in response to Andy Warhol’s “Soup Cans,” was featured in the August issue of Instructor. The poster connects to a design activity that makes use out of old cans.

Featured in the November/December issue of Instructor, is a poster designed by Rafael Esquer, in response to one of Picasso’s vases. This poster is accompanied by a design activity related to biomimicry.

Ahn Tuan Pham of For Office Use Only designed the third poster in the series, a response to one of Hokusai’s 24 Views of Mt. Fuji. This piece is featured in the March issue of Instructor along with an activity about different perspectives on local landmarks.

The final poster was designed by Emanuela Frigerio of C&G Partners. Her playful design, a response to Frank Stella’s “Hyena Stomp,” features an optical illusion that spells “D-E-S-I-G-N,” created from complementary colors.

Designer and educator, Hettie Jordan-Vilanova and Dorothy Dunn collaborated to create all four activities in the series.
