About Blake

Bio

Blake Mycoskie is the Founder and Chief Shoe Giver of TOMS Shoes, a business that in less than 2.5 years has given away over 115,000 pairs of shoes to children in need, and in the next twelve months, will sell and give away an additional 300,000 pairs of shoes.

Because of Blake’s leadership, TOMS has developed a cult following among socially minded consumers and celebrities and gained world-wide attention in The Los Angeles Times, The New York Times, PEOPLE Magazine, TIME Magazine, VOGUE, Oprah Magazine, and CNBC's "The Big Idea with Donny Deutsche.” In writing about creative capitalism for TIME Magazine, Bill Gates mentions TOMS as one of his favorite companies, and in July 2008, First Lady Laura Bush and Cooper Hewitt, the National Design Museum, honored Blake at the White House. At the 2008 Clinton Global Initiative, President Clinton gifted TOMS to over 1000 world leaders and highlighted on-stage Blake’s commitment to deliver 100,000 pairs of shoes to disaster relief efforts in Haiti.

Blake was born August 26, 1976, as the oldest of three children. At an early age, Blake showed uncanny ability to change needs into opportunities. Destined to be a serial entrepreneur, he sold cookies on a local golf course during the summers and taught tennis lessons to earn spending money. By age thirty, Blake had started five successful businesses.

While vacationing in 2006, Blake befriended the children of an Argentine village. He saw they had no shoes to protect their feet when they walked for miles to fresh water or to school, but he also saw the solution. TOMS: Shoes for a Better Tomorrow was founded on a simple premise: for every pair purchased, TOMS will give a pair of shoes to a child in need. One for One.

In May 2006, Blake began selling the canvas shoe — inspired by the traditional Argentine alpargata — from his apartment in Venice, California. By October of the same year, Blake, TOMS employees, and volunteers were able to return to Argentina to hand-deliver 10,000 matched pairs of shoes to children in need. This epic trip was filmed and the resulting documentary, For Tomorrow: The TOMS Shoes Story, premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2008.
TOMS now includes forty-five full-time employees and over thirty interns and TOMS Vagabonds that work out of a studio in Santa Monica. Shoe Drops go to Argentina every other week, giving caring customers the ability to hand-place shoes on children's feet.

TOMS has since partnered with the fashion brand Theory, Whole Foods and Polo Ralph Lauren. The partnership with Ralph Lauren marks the first time in Mr. Lauren’s career that he has ever collaborated with an outside brand.
Blake is 32 years old and lives on a boat in Los Angeles.

An idea worth spreading

When I was just starting in business, a mentor gave me a piece of advice that I will never forget: “The more you give, the more you live.” It was this idea that inspired me to create TOMS. I started a number of businesses before TOMS, but nothing has fired me up like this project. When you use business to make the world a better place, your customers become evangelists. Your company becomes a magnet for unbelievable talent, and the most incredible people want to help your cause. It seems paradoxical, but giving makes great business sense!

I'm passionate about

giving shoes to kids, using capitalism to make the world a better place, fly fishing, playing polo, sailing and good red wine.

Talk to me about

One for One giving, Sailing around the world, Playing polo

People don't know I'm good at

I learned to sail from a DVD box set.
Before starting in business, I dreamed of being a professional tennis player.
I won the TOMS Shoes 1st annual bocce ball tournament.

TOMS Founder Blake Mycoskie: Start Something That Matters

)

Uploaded on Sep 14, 2011

In just five years, Blake Mycoskie has taken his TOMS Shoes from his modest L.A. apartment to the shelves of retail stores all over America. Along the way the company has sold more than 1 million pairs of shoes and, thanks to TOMS' pioneering use of the One for One business model, given away just as many to children in need around the world.

Now Blake has decided to help others follow their hearts and start businesses that matter by sharing what he's learned during his company's meteoric rise.

His new book—which is called just that, Start Something That Matters—features the stories of TOMS and other businesses that Blake says are models for people who care about changing our world. Companies covered include Zappos, FEED Projects and Method Products.

While vacationing in Argentina in 2006, innovator Blake Mycoskie spent a day volunteering with a local non-profit organization delivering used shoes to children in the villages outside Buenos Aires. Mycoskie realized that he could sustainably fund a philanthropic movement through the creation of a unique One for One business model, which provides a new pair of TOMS shoes to a child in need for every pair purchased. Mycoskie subsequently launched Toms Eyewear in 2011 using the One for One model according to which for every pair of eyewear sold, people in need receive prescription glasses, sight-saving surgery or medical treatment. To date, TOMS has given over ten million pairs of new shoes to children in need, and 150,000 children have had their sight restored through purchases of TOMS Eyewear.

Transcript

Blake Mycoskie, Founder, TOMS Shoes

So the name is kind of tricky, because my name is Blake, and everyone wants to meet Tom. But Tom doesn't exist. I started Toms so that I could give away shoes. A lot of companies have a thing where they build a business and then give away as they become successful. Mine was the opposite: I felt a responsibility to help people, and then I had to build a business in order to do it.

So it was important to me to start using more environmentally sustainable materials -- 70% hemp and 30% recycled plastic bottles. Together, that creates something that looks and feels together like a traditional canvas, and it's just as durable, but much more environmentally sustainable. And that's just one example of using creative thinking to get the same end result but with less impact.

This term "social entrepreneurism" is a really good one because it melds the idea of being an entrepreneur and understanding the tenets of what it takes to be a successful entrepreneur, and then also a social mind-set, in that "I'm going to start giving back to the community," or solving a social problem from the beginning, and I'm going to use business to foster that.

What does IAMECO Warrior mean to you?

When I think of "Eco Warrior," it's someone who is using their life, their talents, their resources, to truly save the environment. We all have a certain level of influence; it's the most responsible thing to do to make sure that you use that influence to make the greatest impact you can.

Join the Movement

What do you do, how do you tweak it so that your environmental impact is lower? That is a more sustainable way to approach it than to try to redo the whole system. Part of what I think Toms' impact, hopefully, on the world will be when I'm long and gone, will not necessarily be how many shoes we gave away, but how many other businesses we inspired to follow suit. What they do not only affects immediately the environment or other people today but also all the entrepreneurs who will follow their lead.

Start small, really do it right from the beginning, keep your overhead low, and then if the market responds and it grows, great, you're going to help more people. But if it stays small and you only help a few people you're still helping someone. And that is very admirable.
